couple of 406 issues

hey people

i have a '97 1.9TD LX 406, and wanted to ask a couple of questions. had a search and couldnt shed any light from previous subjects

1 - 3rd gear clunks a bit going in (in a similar fashion to how reverse would if you tried to engage it whilst coasting backwards). it goes in, and works fine once engaged, but grinds when you try to put it in. possibly the syncromesh goosed, but was wondering if theres any 406 specific issues that might cause this i.e. gearbox oil. or is it a replacement box job?

2 - the heater blower issue! its got aircon but isnt digital, it has a sliding thing for the blower speed, had multimeter at fan terminals and got no reading, was wondering what could cause this, the old 306's had a resister in the scuttle area but Im assuming the 406 is different. an idea of where such a resister is or the relay would be great if you can point me in the right direction!

3 - there is a electrical buzz on preignition coming from behind or under the dash on the passenger side, it changes tone slightly but is a general buzzing noise. any ideas on wtf it is!?

thanks guys

quick update -

the blower motor saga is now over! had a look at the live and earth feeds, and on closer inspection the connector block was burnt and melted very badly. At some point it must have shorted and had a mini fire at the connection, as after I managed to disconnect it the heads on both were undistinguishable, black melted and charred. Sorted it by chopping the wires and reconnecting them using spade connectors, with a bit of insulation tape wrapped round the contacts for safety. The blower motor works fine now.

Though i'd add this as its something to refer to if you have the same problem!

The injector pump is also making a loud knocking noise but Im sure the mounts are just loose on the block, will report back on my findings!

I had the same thing on mine, the fan went on, but then off and then on and then off........... It's one with climate tho, so got down in the footwell and one of the main supply connectors was melted and chared..., cleaned it up, soldered it on and Bob's your mothers brother.

I still worry about it to this day, the electrical system really shouldn't burn itself out....should it?! :o

Can happen if the spade connectors start getting corroded and exhibit high internal resistance.
The heat that gets generated is enough to melt any plastic etc nearby.

Must be common then.

I just used spade connecters, with a bit of tape on them. Means If i need to, The wires can still be disconnected

Haha yeah that's normal. Something to do with the heating/ventilation system, probably the recirc flap working out where it is

right ok cheers
I thought it was something to do with the fan but as I've sorted that it aint!

My injection pump seems to be missing a bolt, looking from the passenger side of the pump, at the bottom corner. It has a long cut out (as if it can be set to a particular angle, almost like what you would find on a distributer to fine tune the timing) and there looks like there should be a bolt there? The pump is a bit loose and vibrates loudly at the moment

EDIT -

here!

anyone shed any light on the gear problem?

cheers

There's not much in the way of gear problems come up on here I'm afraid, did you try changing the oil in it? Although I have a sinking feeling this would be only a temporary solution. If the linkages have miles of play perhaps it could be worth looking at changing them but again, I don't think it'll help much. Worth a try though, before you go sourcing a new box/car...

Didn't think about the linkages cheers will have a check. Where is the fluid level hole on these? on the end of the 'box like the 306 ones?
