I have reccently bought a 1998 1.9D LX and im having some cooling issues, when the car gets to 90 or just past the fan isnt kicking in and to release the heat im having to put my heaters on full which you can imagine isnt that nice when its hot. I was thinking about just having a switch in the car so when im sat in traffic I can switch the fan on and it'll keep it cool. What im after knowing is which is the wire the controls the fan ive had a quick look but it all seems to be very compact at the front of the engine bay and I dont really want to be taking things apart if i dont have to.
Thanks

Re: 1.9D LX Engine Fan Problem
There's lots of problems with cooling fans, have a search. A thread. If it's just the one fan and you've got no air con then it's a fairly simple system. I presume there's just the one relay behind the grille (someone'll soon correct me if I'm wrong) this is a good place to catch all the sh/t going and the connectors are prone to rusting. Also, the fans themselves can either wear the brushes out or fill with crud, if you can get to the connections then wire it straight from the battery to test it. The switch should be on the thermostat housing but I'm not sure if yours will have just the one. And then, of course, there's a fuse...

Re: 1.9D LX Engine Fan Problem
HI,
Dont trust the temp guages on these cars!
Ive tried two clusters and the fan kicks in at 95 with one and 105 on another.
My 405 kicked in at 85-90 so when my 406 was well over 100 I was panicking. 406's have cats so I assume they run hotter also.
First thing is to remove the brown plug on the thermostat hosing to check the 3 stage fan process.
If your car has working aircon and you are worried, the first stage runs all the time when switched on which is a small get out when in hot stationary traffic and the stress kicks in before the fan does!
