Bad behaving clutch ..?

Post by compwizard »

Hi chaps, just joined, great site ...

I wonder if someone could advise as I've had a few opinions on it ..

For the last few months sometimes changing gear is smooth and by the numbers, the next day it might be really heavy and especially at low speeds I get a 'judder' as the bite kicks in.

No expert but I think my year has a self adjusting clutch, could that be it?

That's the best I could describe it, hope someone can help so I know what to fix and to budget for!

Peugeot dealers like most French dealers are shite and dont wanna know
about problems etc. I've heard a lot of Peugeot's suffer electrical
problems in some way. I know on the Service Readout I have that @
90k osf electric window and indicators stopped working. They were
replaced and I bought the car at 111k miles 5 wks ago. :cheesy:

I know what you mean Geordie, I stupidly got my local dealer to do a minor service on my 306 a few years back, ?300 later and the old line "...We tried to ring you to tell you we needed to do essential maintenance ..." my arse!

Cheers Niz .... It's an R Reg 1.9 TDi LX that's done 76K (See garage and avatar!)

Please help, it's getting worse!

My clutch feels worn, the pedal height is above the
brake pedal and i get a bit of judder (but you can tease
the judder away by driving smoothly).

I get 'squeeking' as the drive takes up and have found
out that the Dual Mass flywheel and cluch should be
replaced as the bits on the flywheel that 'take up'
some of the drive when you change gear are worn
down to the stops.

Would like to know if anyone else has had these bits done
and how much??

I've heard that the Clutch Pedal is always high on the 406, I know mine is
but its not juddering (yet).

I managed to put 2 and 2 together after about a week of
ownership i found the remains of a ................TOW BAR..
...........ARRRRRHHH :x .

Didnt know when i bought it but explains the worn clutch.

The car pulls like a train though so that 'Caravaning' doesnt
seem to hurt it.

Yours is the cable driven clutch system I believe ! ! and the cable has a self racheting mechanism to compensate for wear. If your clutch is on its way out then you will get judder and also grinding upon selection of First Gear if its almost totally shot !

There is another reason for judder on pull off, worn wheel bearings or knackered CV joints, is there a deep humm / rumble when you pull off and is it just on the gearbox side ?

Jack the front of the car up and support it on axel stands, Get another person to sit in the car and engage first, when he / she releases the clutch you will be able to visually see the problem, either the engine and gearbox will judder forwards, or the wheel will rotate un-naturally, i.e. it will wobble as it rotates.

My original Clutch lasted 120k miles and I fitted a new one myself ! ! what a nice job it is, NOT ! ! its not as hard as you might think, but if you want one installing by a grage expect between ?350 - ?500 approx for a clutch fitted.

Thats an expense I can do without as mine is on 113k atm.

How much to buy a clutch and where from as I would do it meself with a m8?
Would prefer a sports clutch rather than normal.

Cheers Niz, I'll jack it up on the weekend ... What research I've done suggests a clutch on these should last a lot longer than 75K, looks like I'll be running it in to the local Pug mechanic for a recon at the weekend!

Although I hadn't thought it could be CV / bearings .... the tracking hasn't been quite right since I got the wheels put on ... teach me for taking to a `mate in the pub who happens to be a mechanic ...` lol

Thanks again, I'll get the cheque book out, the mrs' trip to centre parcs will have to wait.
