Hi,
Had my 406 HDI for about 4 weeks now, sounded ok when i first got it, but ive noticed over the past two weeks or so, the engine has become very loud and tappety.
Does anyone know what could be causing it to sound like this and is there a a cure?
Thanks in advance.

Same with mine. Does it go quiet over about 3,000 rpm?

If it does then it's the injectors (apparently), mine are noisiest when cold. The other thing to worry about is the crank pulley...

The bottom pulley will give a nasty metallic clicking sound at low revs which rises and falls according to the revs, tell tale signs of a failing pulley are a brown dusty build up in the area and/or shiney metal flakes around the area and on the sub frame underneath. Once it get's near the end it's an unmistakeable horrible sound which tells you something is badly wrong down there
The other noises the HDi make is a clattery sound on acceleraton through 2000 - 3000 rpm, which promptly dissapears after 3000 rpm. This has been the subject of great debate on here but is generally considered "normal" although most probably never left the factory like it

some say it's wear in the injectors but if the car generally runs well and gives decent economy then this would be an uneconomical repair to do.

ok thanks for the info, think the pulleys were fine, just fitted new fan belt at weekend, as the old one was squealing like a pig!

Hello, something strange happened to my D9 today. I started it this morning and it seemed louder than usual. I thought it was because of the cold start, but the noise did not go away after reaching 90 degrees. I'm getting like a clanky noise. I'll try and make a recording and post it up if I can.

Bottom pulley?
Starts as a cold weather tick then becomes a loud smacking clanking noise.
look for a brown dust around the area and the noise should rise and fall with revs.

I was thinking that and to check the belts too. Incidently, it's only 3 x 10mm bolts and a nut to get the top cam belt cover off, much easier than the 2.1

Thanks guys, you were spot on! I managed to get a replacement pulley from GSF for around £45 and just finished changing it. What a headache.. Now all I have to do is fix that hole in the flexi pipe!

My original pulley lasted 145,000 miles, the replacement about 25,000.
Draw your own conclusions
