1.9 DT multiple problems

I have an N reg 406 and have had it for about a year now. It's had quite a few problems ever since I got it. Firstly it's very very gutless, Im normally reduced to 3rd even 2nd gear on most hills, it almost feels like the Turbo is not operating. There is no smoke coming from the exhaust except on heavy acceleration when a bit of black smoke comes out. It also doesn't like starting very much, it coughs a splutters for while then a big puff of smoke comes out. The glow plugs seem to be working fine. The other problem i'm having is that only the temperature gauge works, The rev counter, speedo and fuel gauge all very rarely work. Sometimes if i hit the dash above they come into life for a while.

I've always had peugeots and have never had one with such little power, I previously had a 405 estate that had far more power than the 406. Could it possibly be a faulty injector? or a turbo problem. I've changed the fuel filter etc.. and this hasn't helped at all. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it or the cars going to end up being scrapped. Thanks

This will sound odd now, and please don't take it the wrong way but these days with second hand prices being so low you may be better buying another 406 that works, and especially a 2.1 td or if you don't do many miles a 2.0 petrol (these give no trouble at all).

You could spend a lot of dollar and a lot of trial and error, time, time off road, all for little gain. The 1.9td by the way is well known for being slow (from memory it's around 250kg's heavier than an old 405).

You'd still get £250.00? I would say for yours with an MOT - add £300.00 and you should get a much less troublesome 406 of around the same age, maybe a P/R reg etc.

Just a thought, and you did say "multiple" problems :|

How about having the injectors serviced? The dash problems sound like a dry joint, probably a connecting plug needs a bit of a clean or maybe a bad connection on the circuit board itself.

Or, as Welton says, bin it and buy another.

It's possibly a bit odd that fans of this model on this very forum are suggesting to bin them, rather than fixing them but "this aint no never-never land", Peugeot have done this to us - spares far too expensive guys! Just looking at sorting the brake backplates on mine: plates, bearings, new shoes (hey, I'm only dreaming anyway)=£645.39. Not an option to me here but in the UK you could buy a whole car (with decent backplates) for that.
