broken Cat

Hi, I have already posted this topic in General Chat Forum, but I think it will be better here. Whilst on holiday in France last August last year the cat on my 406 SX DT broke. I took it to a Peugeot Main dealer in France (try explaning that the catalytic Converter is faulty when you dont speak French, thats not in any phrase books) anyway, they replaced the cat with a new Peugeot part (640 euro's, you would think it would be cheaper in France), but at the beginning of Sept this year the car was serviced and garage said thye cat was faulty (muffled noise from inside the cat). I have e-mailed Peugeot customer service for help over a week ago, but have not had a reply. Is it unreasonable to expect the cat to last longer than just over 12 months as the original lasted for 9 years ? Does anybody have any ideas af a course of action I could take other than pay another £460 for another one. Also if I continue to use the car could I damage the engine ? I forgot to ask at the garage as I was stunned at the news.
Many thanks
