Sorry if this is completely the wrong place to post this, but could anyone recommend a decent garage in the Surrey, Guildford/Camberley area where I can get my clutch changed on my D9?

Dealer wants £650
Local mechanic wants £520

Any better offers?

I am loathed to take it to Mr Clutch, but feel I may have too for cost reasons. I am worried about there level of work since the previous owner had it done there at only £280, but after 25,000 miles it needs doing again.

Not that it'll help you much (sorry) but Googling about for any other quotes I saw that the clutch on a 407 can cost over a grand I like them less and less and less and less... still, in 5 years time diesel will cost 5 quid a litre so I'll be driving something that runs on chicken poo anyway

Had mine done a few weeks back - local stealer was cheapest at 399.93 all in. Two good local independants IIRC (and there may be a post on here somewhere with it in) were 430 and 470 odd...

Suggest you phone around a bit further afield, within reasonable getting home/to work distance of course.

Thanks. I remember reading your post which is why I nearly fell off my chair when the dealer quoted £650 to me! I thought all dealers used the same labour codes and fixed pricing. Obviously not!

I have tried a few other places and still haven't got anything for under £500. Even local nationwide autocentre want £550! I thought they were meant to be well cheap!

The problem is, as you say, being able to drop the car off and then get to work within reasonable distance. I have found a pug specialist but he is out by the Top Gear track which is about 40 minutes drive away and now where near work.

Might have to go with the mobile mechanic guy who are currently the cheapest quote of £520, but that is more for convenience than anything.

You need to be a bit carefull. To do the clutch properly needs the front wheels off, arch liner out, transmission drained, disconnected and dropped out the bottom of the car. Plus IIRC the clutch slave cylinder piston has no retainer so it can ooze it's way out onto the ground after removal unless care taken. I can imagine just what a dogs breakfast someone could make of it (collateral damage) trying to take shortcuts.

The other thought that occured to me was the probable higher fixed costs for a business in Surrey compared to East Midfordshire.

Its a D9 with cable clutch so no slave cylinder or anything that complicated.

I had a quote through from mr clutch and its £320 which is amazing really.

I am very reluctant to go with them though since they replaced the clutch 30,000 miles ago at only 60,000 miles and it is screwed already.

Its such a difficult dilemma - go with main dealer who you know will do the job properly, but at a cost which is 50% of the cars value!, or go the cheap route and risk poor parts and a rushed job.

Did you ever change the cable? (just realise you have a 1.8 petrol ) cos maybe the cable is/was maladjusted?

I have been thinking about it, but I thought they were self adjusting so dismissed it pretty quickly.

I am going to have another go at the lower engine mount this weekend as well, so hopefully I can fix that and I can rule that out as well.

Do you think the cable could cause the problems? (judder when pulling away in first. I dont get any clutch slip once the clutch is fully engaged and no other problems from it through the gears.)

I am happy to iron out all the cheap things first so , I have just ordered a new cable from peugeot.

I will try and do the lower mount this weekend, and if that doesn't fix the problem then its saving the pennies time for a new clutch.

Be careful on this - a D9 is fitted with a DMF and if there is any slipping or judder with the clutch it will need a new plate,cover,release bearing and flywheel - never just do the plate. In most cases it is the DMF that fails before any cover or plate goes. Therefore you will have a minimum of about £350+ in parts and the labour is lengthy - about 8 -10 hours if all goes well. When all done you will have a different motor - they go as sweet and smooth as you could wish but they only last for 80,000 mls if you don't treat them well.

Sorry I missed this!
I would recommend Bentleys garage in brookwood and Lemon's garage in Horsell. Independant garages but they know their stuff and the price is good.

The HDi 90 hp D9 isn't. The HDi 110 D9 is. As for other engine types I don't know.

Its also a Petrol, so I dont think they came with DMF did they?
