You've got a 2l petrol haven't you? That's a bit odd, I've never heared of this on a petrol engine before, only diesel, petrol usually needs a spark to ignite it, it doesn't rely on compression ignition like a diesel does. And what's the link with the brake pedal, servo, vaccuum, advancing the timing maybe? but the ignition circuits should be dead once you switch it off at the key......... ow my head!
Have you tried a google? Hang on...
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 559AAFc49v OK it's a boat but it's very interesting. The one about the switch being faulty sounds like a good place to start.

Sounds like a dodgy ignition switch to me.

When you stop and turn off the ignition and pull the key out feel the
key blade to see if its hot, if it is then like welly says you could have
a faulty ignition switch

I seem to remember this car's been having a lot of electical gremlins, maybe some clever previous owner's been playing silly buggers with the electrics...

My money's on the ignition switch too, unless there's something else that's causing the brake lights or anything like that to hold the ignition line high, but then again the brake lights don't come on when the key's out... Got to be the ignition switch.
Unless it's a D9, then I ain't got a clue

Right, after studying the circuit diagrams, I'm almost certain it's the ignition switch is at fault if your brake lights otherwise work normally. I'm sure one of the contacts is stuck closed and all your normal dashboard-side "ignition-on" functions are being powered by the fuse for the brake lights (F28)
One way to kill your engine if it happens again should be to hit the heated rear windscreen switch. This should pop the 10 amp fuse F28. Or you could just yank the fuse.

Or, if you don't want to blow any fuses, engage 2nd gear and stall her...
