Ignition timing and smoke

Hi Pug lovers
Waiting to get my clutch fixed on Wednesday should be straight forward I hope ....?... but when I last had my mot done back last year in December at the stealers , I though I would have problems with the smoke coming out the back (dark grey), passed the mot no problems with the smoke test well under the problem mark , but remember asking the reception guy to ask the mechanics about the haze of smoke coming out the back, noticeable on the motor-way with the car behind shining its lights through the exhaust smoke , I lost the paper work from the garage but I do remember it saying something about checking the Ignition timing to do with the smoke. The fuel economy seems ok and the power is still there. A mechanic friend of mine said to take it to a diesel specialist and get the ECU checked. Can anyone shed some light on the dark grey smoke problem , car runs fine apart from the stiff clutch pedal, but that should be fixed come Wednesday fingers crossed ,99, 2.0 hdi 173000 miles. All the best Sollyboy

Stuck EGR valve.....? So how do I release the EGR valve , I've seen some posts on the forum that say to give it a clean out . Is this a easy job to do ? will check my mates Haynes manual tonight ? would clogged up EGR valve cause the engine to be a bit on the smokey side ? Cheers all the best Sollyboy

Stuck open or closed?
Sorry if it's a silly question.

You know what - I'm going to be good at all this now  ....

I can say only one thing here - my EGR was stuck open (leaking) have a sniff around it and you'll smell it! my car used to smoke quite a bit in car headlights behind me but with the new EGR the smoke has gone, and I mean really gone  I can't even 'make' it smoke now.

I'm going to have a look at now to see if it is stuck open ( not sure what stuck open will look like ) but Lets have a look . Can it be repaired by just cleaning it ? , and the most important thing is how much will a new ERG value cost ?? Cheers all the best Sollyboy. One more thing just got the clutch done £250 parts and labour ( swansea ) nice soft pedal .
