Squealing fan belt

Hi guys

recently put a new fan belt on my 110, which was fine, but the crankshaft pulley needed replacing, so since replacing it, all i now get is a squeal as i drive along, has anyone had this problem, ive noticed the new pulley moves slightly from side to side when its going round, not sure if this has anything to do with it?

Can anyone help me out here?

Cheers

be careful, fan belt failure on the HDi can be very nasty.

Should be no squeal or movement in the pulley. Did you change the pulley? If you got it done at a garage i'd get it straight back and I hope you had new belt with the pulley?

yes, pulley is brand new, didnt get it at a grage tho, my dad put it on, he is an ex-mechanic, he reckons its squealing cos the belt is cathing sumthin, hes got two washers to put on the pulley to set it out a bit, as the belt is very close to the cam belt cover, and there is a bolt underneath which he thinks it could be catching on.

The squealign only started since putting on the new pulley! :(

Ive just been out and had a look and listen, cant see anything wrong, but the noise starts at about 1,500 revs, and then u hear it all the time when ur driving around! and its only done it since putting the new pulley on!

OOH, doesn't sound right to me, if it's the correct pulley, it shouldn't need washers to move it away from the cam cover. And NO it shouldn't wobble!

No you shouldn't pack things out with washers.

Have you tried a sparing squirt of WD40 on the tensioner to rule that out? also maybe the a/c pulley?

The crank pulley does look a bit odd when rotating to be honest, almost like it's shaking a bit! mine is a brand new Peugeot one and looks a bit "shakey" like this.

As mbell666 said if that belt leaps off then it can get tangled around the crank and mash the head up

Well im putting it on the ramp at work tomorow, gonna take the belt off and see if the noise is still there, at least that way i can rule out which one isnt causing the noise, the belt or the pulley! did try wd40 on it but only lasted a few minutes and the noise was back. The pulley is brand new although its not a genuine Peugeot one.

Decided not to bother putting washers on it now anyway!

Will let u all know how we get on.

I dunt think your meant to run the engine/pulley without a belt on...

well ive done it b4, when i was investigating the crankshaft pulley rattle, the guy at peugeot sed take belt off and listen to pulley, to make sure its that , thats causing the noise, i did and its been fine since!

Rite then, we have discovered that the pulley is rubbing against the cam belt cover,(it appears to stick out a bit more than the original) this is causing the squeak, so we av put a bit of grease on for now, :) i know this wont last for ever, its just a temporary fix.

What we did notice is little white bits(like flakes), around the ring of the inner part of the pulley, which im led to believe that its breaking up already, i guess this is what you get when you buy the cheaper alternative! :(

You sure its the right pulley?

It breaking up and also touching the cam-belt cover are probably related. This would suggest to me its not the right pulley, maybe pug changed the offset or you have one from a different HDi engine.

I'd be sorting it pretty quickly...

well i got it from ebay, and was assured its for the 110 HDI, citroen and peugeot, before i bought it i got a price for a genuine one from peugeot, which was costly, the guy sed the original has a flywheel(or sumthin like that), he also sed i could get one without, but it may cause a bit of vibration, which is what i went and bought!

Holy crap! these people should not be allowed to suggest stuff like that :frown:

You've got a non-damperned one from a petrol by the sounds. The belt won't like that and the downstroke shock of the diesel crankshaft will transfer to the belt, alternator, etc etc. the damped unit is there to smooth the action of the rotating part so as to stop vibration and noise etc.

I bought one from the Dealers for £128.00 if I recall - been fine since.
