Unknown Light On My Dash

Hi all. I need some help. Last Sunday I noticed that my oil cap was missing, on my P reg 2000cc GLX, my engine was covered in oil and smelling strangely. I don't know how long the cap was missing. I got one from a scrapyard the following day. Tonight my engine cut out and I had a light come on my dash. Its an orange light with and engine on it and what looks like a 'K' on. I managed to get the car going and get it home. But the car cut out again as I pulled up outside my house. Can someone tell me what the light is and how I remedy it? Also is it connected to my missing cap? As you may have noticed I am not very mechanically minded.

Hi there. It's the engine management light (EML, K-light etc.) it's saying your engine management isn't happy about something. How did you clean the oil off?

Daft question but have you checked your oil level?

Haven't been able to yet.
No time, what with work. I was planning to steam clean this weekend.

Thank goodness for that!
It may be worth putting a flush through and changing the oil & filter for good measure, just in case any crud got in.
