Noticed a clunking/vibration noise from the front end when in idle over the past few months and now when i take my foot of the gas when travelling , i hear a clunk. Its not particularly loud but very clear. The noise at idle is very irritating and was hoping someone might have a clue on what it might be. Could it be the engine mounts ??

I had the clutch replaced a few months ago, along with the front discs anf pads if that would throw any light on it.

Sorry I can't help you, but I've been hearing a similar clunking from my 2.1td when lifting off the accelerator too .... it's one of those things that I try to ignore but worry that I am doing so at my peril! I'm guessing that it's likely an engine mount and guess further that it'll cost more to fix than I have (nothing!).

Open the bonnet, and with the engine running - blip the throttle with the TPS unit and if the engine lurches forward by any more than 15mm then the rear lower mount is goosed.

I can't say that this will cause your clonk (chances are it will) but it's a sure test for a dodgy mount. Oh and don't leave it alone as it will happily tear through the exhaust downpipe flexi and the intercooler hose in time.

Cheers for that handy advice. It's something I've been meaning to do for a while really, but by way of an irrational false economy have failed to do so by way of a fear of what I might find! If it *was* to be an engine mount is that looking like a lot of money to fix? Anyhow, thanks again. Hope this is all of some help to the other bloke above too!

Thanks welton. Ive tried the blip thing and there is some movement but i would say it was downwards more than forwards..... as though the engine was tring to roll over (if thats makes any sense). Maybe im seeing something which is normal for a car with 170000 on the clock.

Ive got it booked in to the mechanic after xmas and will only use it a few days until then. FIngers crossed its something else.

You seem to be unaware that 170k isn't a lot for a petrol 406, let alone a diseasel... It is about time for an engine mount to give up the ghost though, and when one goes the others are put under more strain and will likely rip in short order

Thanks........ its been the best car ive ever had and dont want to get rid of. Had a few things go wrong in the last couple of months but generally its been a gem. Did the disks and pads myself with the help from a neighbour /spare time mechanic. Replaced the shocks on the back (very impressed with myself) but didnt solve the problem i had which was a clunk from the rear when going over bumps. Will have another look when I get a chance.

awesome. ill have a look next time im under. Did the front links earlier in the year, the nuts were a bit of a nightmare to get off but not too bad. Imaginechanging these wont be tooooo difficult (He Says !!!!)

Actually I changed the drop links and the top links thinking about it. The top links were so worn that I could rock the wheel about!
It's not a bad job, but I did have to drop the rear hub down to get to one of the bolts for some reason I can't remember!

Yes I did, I needed to disconnect the filler hose from the petrol tank and drop it down a little to get enough clearance. That was a pretty straightforward job though
