Hi Neil
Check under your carpets front and rear; there have been problems with water ingression through the rear light clusters and the doors if the water shedders have been ripped.
With the car idling you will hear the compressor kick in when you turn on the aircon. Most common fault is gas leak from the condensor due to corrosion but with the age of yours it may just need a re-charge (like mine!)

If you've got aircon it could also be a case that the drainage tube under the car (passenger side near the centre console) has blocked

If all the gas has gone then the compressor will not kick in ,have a look
around the condensor and pipework for green stains as this is a sign of
a leak

the condensor is in front of the normal radiator and also looks
like a radiator, trace the pipes back from the compressor this will
take you to it, hope this helps

There's a pressure switch that prevents the compressor operating with low or no gas.

It's on the front of your engine below the power steering pump, driven by the same belt.

Is it the only lead coming from the compressor?
I thought there was a socket on the compressor which a lead plugged into; I'll have a look tomorrow.

On my D8 there's a socket but there's two different types of compressor, so I could imagine one had a lead dangling out of it.
Get it in the air and check the loom around that area for a connector but bear in mind it's probably been disconnected for a reason (i.e. check it actually works without doing anything worrying before you drop the car).
