Engine Mount Moving.

Hi folks.
I hope you don't mind me asking questions (newbie) but i have been checking posts for last few weeks & cant seem to find what im looking for.

I am the proud owner of a 1998 2.1 turbo diesel 406...lol. To be honest i bought the car quite cheap knowing there was some faults to put right. I have managed to sort most of them however I have a problem with one (maybe more) of the engine mounts.

Looking from front of car on the left hand side (drivers side) there is an engine mount which is bolted to the side of the inner wing, the other part of bracket sits on top of a large round bush which also is bolted through the top of the inner wing, it then has an alloy bracket which reaches over the top of the timing cover & then bolts onto the engine.

The problem i have is that there is a lot of movement between the bottom of the round bush & the metalwork of the car, i can quite easily rock the engine back & forth & observe this bush moving (around half - three quarters of an inch).

does anyone know how this bush is fastened to the body of the car please as i cant find any way possible to get to the underside of the bush & the Haynes manual was a complete waste of money. Maybe it simply screws into a captive nut, if this is the case then i would assume that the captive nut has became loose & would need re-welding back onto the body.

Any help would be appreciated as i need this car to get me to work & back & i don't really want to be snapping exhausts & the like by leaving it.

I hear there are diagrams on here somewhere but i cant find them with keywords. Any kind of workshop manual would be good (other than Haynes crap)

Thank you again for your support my friends.

Stick a bit of wood on a trolley jack and raise it up to the sump until it slightly raises the engine. Undo the nuts at the back of the mount (going into the side of the engine bay), there's probably 3 holding it there. Remove the nut on top of the cone bit of rubber. Remove the bolts holding the mount to the engine. Grab a pry bar or big screwdriver and get the mount off.

The rubber cone is simply screwed into the body, but it can be tight. Around the edge of its top is a lip with some bits missing. The lip's actually got metal in it so take a screwdriver+hammer, and unscrew it that way. If it's snapped in two (as I've read some can do) then you'll have to be creative. If you've got access to a welder, you can just weld a nut to the remains...

Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly :) You will have fun getting the mount on the engine and rubber bit though. Brute force, screamed obscenities and a big hammer work well

Welcome macumlad! :D
As mjb says the rubber bush is simple screwed into the wing. I had a very elusive knocking noise on mine and it turned out that this wasn't screwed in tight; it may be your problem too.
Make sure that you get support under the engine before you undo it all!!!!
