Hi all. My car went into my local mechanic a couple of weeks ago after the clutch went. I've subsequently found the Clutch master cylinder also needs replacing - fair enough.
I've now been told that the gearbox casing is cracked and needs to be sorted - this came about when the mechanic test drove the car after fitting the new clutch - apparently it started leaking oil at a rate.
i realise there's an element of guessing here, but do you think the issue may have pre-existed or does it sound as if the case has been damaged during clutch renewal? I'm not aware of any leaks before it went in. Its a 1998 hdi 2.0 estate.

Sounds like a poor job has been done by the mechanic and he's
trying to avoid being blamed,yet another cowboy, the motor
trade does seem to attract them.

These Garages do break stuff from time to time and try to add it to the bill. Your gearbox casing wasn't cracked when you took it there I assume? If it's any help then our 406 boxes are tough I don't remember anyone having a cracked case ever.
It's worth noting that the 406 clutch is a horrible job of at least 8 hours if done properly but many will try to cut this time down by pulling/prizing/whacking stuff to the get the job done quicker.
There are places about that will weld cracked casings - this might be worth checking out?

As the other guys have said, your information suggests that the gearbox has allegedly been damaged in the course of the gearbox removal and refitting.However, there is also the possibility that your gearbox oil was very low, due to a leak that was present before the gearbox was removed and when filled up to the correct level afterwards, the leak has shown itself.
Yes, there are a lot of cowboys in the motor trade, there are also lots of weekend mechanics that think they know it all and cause more problems by trying to be clever and repairing faults that should be left to skilled people.
I recently quoted a woman for the replacement of a timing belt on a Nissan Serena diesel, they are a difficult job, even for a pro, to cut the story short, a guy from the pub did the job, I got a call from the woman asking for me to look at the car as they couldn't start the car afterwards...guess what? They had not set the timing before they stripped it down....you should always set the timing and mark all pulleys and gears to make sure everything goes back correctly.....they had broken the camshaft!!!! £800 of damage!
