Buying a 406... advice?

Hey all
Only new to the site here now... i left a message on welcome but it needs to be moderated so iv decided to jump straight in
Im looking to buy a 1.9 diesel turbo 406... has anyone got any tips for going and looking at one? any common defects i should be aware of? or just tips for going to look at a diesel 406 in general?
Help appreciated as iv never actually went to buy a car before

There are two phases of 406. The first (D8) which was available from 1996-1999 and the second (D9) which was available from 1999-2004.
The 1.9TD and 2.1TD are avaiable in the first phase (D8). The 2.0HDi and 2.2HDi was available in the second Phase (D9)
Now the D9's diesel engine is commonly known as a HDi (High Pressure Direct Injection) and this engine is the name Peugeot have given to all their Turbo Diesel engines since 1999.
Both the 1.9TD and the entry level 2.0 HDi are available in 90bhp with with roughly 150nm Torque
The 2.1TD and the next level 2.0HDi are available in 110bhp withThe 2.2HDi is an angry beast at 136bhp but it is a relatively rare model and will be hard to track down a good one
Personally I would recommend a Phase 2, known on here as a D9, with a 2.0 HDi 90bhp engine for reliability. If you want more power, it can be remapped to 125bhp which will also return better fuel economy.
I have a D9 HDi 90 and it drives amazing, and although mjb may disagree, the D9 is way better looking than the old D8 model.

My dad has a 2.2HDi in his 607. It is relaxed. I imagined it to be an animal in a 406

My dad had a Hdi and had much bother with it... The Hdi fuel system gave him grief lol. I think id be more interested in a D8 as you call it Eoin ... Btw i think they are better looking so mjb is not the only 1
Is there any tips that you folks can give for me actually going to buy the car? basic things to look out for to limit as much as possible, the chance of me buying a heap
Any realy common things to look out for on the 406?

The D9 is indeed a better looking car but it's not without its drawbacks. Just go along with your head screwed on and walk away of you're not happy, there's loads more fish in the sea (Autotrader lists 5 pages of 1.9s)

Wet footwells and spare wheel well on saloons (easy fix, but great for haggling)
Key that works using the button AND in the lock
If it's got an immobiliser, check the condition of the keypad and make sure you get the code
Check EVERYTHING electric. If it's a D8 most things can be diagnosed and fixed quite easily
Vibrations at bite point and under hard acceleration at peak torque - sign of a shot engine mount
Shouldn't steer itself when you let go of the steering wheel
When was the cambelt last changed
On cheaper cars, check to see if you'll be buying new tyres in a week's time to replace the 5 bald ones...
Listen to the starter the first time it's started up. If it doesn't sound strong you could be buying a new battery soon
Check the aircon's cold
If there's an undertray under the engine compartment, have a look to see if there's a river of coolant under the radiator
