406 Sri Problems

Hi,
I have a 2001 2.2 Sri estate - wondered if anyone could help me with some advice on a couple of things:

1) I recently serviced the car, but totally failed to locate the fuel filter - have pug hidden it or am I having a stupidity episode?

2) The car has been clunking on gear changes - quite a bit of movement of the engine if trotlle blipped. Its also eaten one flexi section on the exhaust in the last year. Trawling this forum seems to indicate the rear lower engine mount - where would I get one of these - ie not the dealer :-)... How much of a mission is it to fit?

3) Anyone else have the instrument panel cut out totally for a second and then continue like nothing ever happened? Rare, but slightly worrying!

Cheers, Mark

1. It's probably under the car in front of the drivers side rear wheelarch. You'll want some hose clamps and some latex gloves though as you can end up with half a tank worth of unleaded all over you and the floor (voice of experience  ). My tubby's was held in with zip ties

2. You're pretty much stuck buying it from the dealers unless http://www.gsfcarparts.com sell them. I hear the bottom mount's a pig to change - good luck! I'd try replacing the top mount first as it's easy and relatively cheap

3. Chances are it's dodgy soldering on the instrument panel PCB. Take it out and re-solder each joint

Cheers, will have a look in the wheelarch at the weekend.

The last garge it was in told me that the top mounts were fine and the way the engine moves suggests to me that its the lower one thats duff. That website didnt seem to list any 406 engine mounts so I will get a price from the dealer

For the sake of the 3-4 times a year the intruments go nuts, I'll just leave it then.... My recent experience of pug interiors /dashes has not been fun. What crazy person hid every screw and fitting needed to get the trim apart?

Nah it's not in the wheelarch, it's just in front of it under the rear door

Some of the 406 interior's a bitch to get at (trying to remove a first revision (flat) courtesy light will likely break it, even when you know where and how it's held in!) but the instrument cluster's not too bad. 3 screws holding the big plastic bit (including 3 of the dash vents) in, then 4 more for the instrument cluster

Ive got a 4 way ciggy lighter to wire in and a couple more cables to tidy from the ice so I will have to learn where more of the interior screws are hidden. The fact I cant get the headunit all the way in is also on the list... So probably a few jobs to deal with and have a look at the soldering on the back of the clocks while I'm at it. Thanks again
