Probably me being paranoid...

Hi all (again :D seem to be full of questions )

Is probably me being paranoid but semi high speeds the engine seems to be working very hard, like 3,500rpm at 80 and just feels like the engine wants a 6th gear just to cruise...... is that normal? It might just be that 'new 2nd hand car paranoia'.

oh it's a 2.0 d9 glx - still finding out what engine model.

Thanks

Dan

My 1.9 D8 would need about 3500 to do 80. Sounds reasonable to me.

Mind you, mine is very old and very knackered :)

That'll be a 2 litre 16v petrol then, very informative page here!
Do you know when it was last serviced Dan? Any service history?
Check the air filter and hoses, Is the clutch slipping?

thanks guys, teamster is it a usual thing then? the information seemed to be of no surprise :)

no idea when it was last serviced or the service history its just coming up to 59k on the clock.

i'll check the filter and hoses asap, clutch doesnt feel like its slipping - the only even slight feeling like that was when i drove over some ice'y patches.

looked through the page, very informative but a bit over my head lol if its not step 1, step 2 then im lost

so looks like a service is on the cards asap then...........

I don't know the EW10 to be honest Dan, those are the things that I would check myself to start with :)

Nah I'm sure that's right Dan, 80 at 3500 is what mine does.

I reckon it's all part of a conspiracy to raise money from speeding fines, if I've got half a tank of juice and the engine's nice and warm, all 5 of the gauges point straight up at 80, look lovely it does.... and the car feels so at home at that speed too!

It's the wrong way to compare performance - if that's you question. For example a 406HDi 110 does 70mph at 2200 rpm and has plenty of poke to accelerate for longer since it is well within it's max torque curve compared with a Petrol BMW316i that is revving it's nuts off - 70mph at 3000 rpm still has plenty of poke to accelerate albeit on a sharper curve before falling away. The difference is where the torque curve is in the rev range - diesels for example have a flatter torque curve lower down the range. The rating of BHP is based on the amount of work done in a given time irrespective of RPM of the engine. I'm trying to put it in simple terms. E.G. you can have a high performance petrol car that is crudely rated at 500 BHP but will need to rev at 6-7000 rpm to achieve it. A 500 BHP truck will rev at 2000 rpm and will haul a 45 tonne load but if you hitched the car to it (1) It would just sit there with wheels spinning (2) Probably only last one trip of 100 miles whereas the truck will go on for 500,000 miles. It's just a simple analogy but you get the point.

That's why I made sure I gave the engine info :)

Thanks

Mine the same around 80 its just purring to you thats all if you think about it the exhaust manifold is right next to the bulkhead because its the way the engine is tilted back.
