My front passenger side spring snapped yesterday i supplied the part and my local garage fitted for £40 was that a fair deal.

does anyone also know if this is common i can see how it could have snapped as the car is only 9 years old i tow but i would expect the rears to go first. I was going to attempt it but thought for £40 i would rather somone else have the hassle.

It's very very common - I've had a front n/s and a rear o/s - although the rear one wasn't as dramatic as the front

I only had the one front spring changed despite the advise to work in pairs etc. but it's been fine since it happened 9? months ago.

The vast majority of broken springs that I've changed have been O/S front on all sorts of cars, Mondeo is a common one, but they break on all sorts of cars, the O/S front is the one that carries most load on a right hand drive car (drivers weight etc.).

£40 was a fair price.

I had to change the O/S/F spring on one of the Xsara's last week(also replaced the top ball race at the same time).
Came out one morning th find the spring trying to put a hole in the tyre. I've changed dozens of springs in the past but they still make me a little nervous.

I hope just changing one side isnt going to affect the opposite side with it being older though i would have expected the rears to go first as i do a lot of towing. I could have got the spring less than £30 from my brother but he doesnt work sundays and needed it urgently doing as drive 60 miles to and from work each day

I asked themechanic who changed my spring if I should change both at the same time and he said there was no need. The car felt fine with just one new spring.
