Engine light on, argh!

Post by StevieboyTD »

Depressing moment for me, car is on the blink and i've not got a clue what the problem is! (don't tell a customer!)

Jumped in the car this afternoon and the engine light come on a few seconds after i started up. (i'm used to the selftest when the ignition is turned on)

Engine seems a bit sluggish (wouldn't rev over 3k at one point) but the light would occasionally go out until i hit a speed bump or go around a corner, which makes me think it's a fluid level. But i've checked the oil, brake fluid, powersteering fluid & coolant but they're all fine. It's not an oil/water sensor as they'd phased it out by the time my car was built (and there's nothing sticking out the back of the fuel housing either!)

It's got an obd socket, but obviously due to the age i can't read from it.

Any ideas what i should look for as i'm starting to run out of ideas (run xud9 motors for years, never had one with a management light before!)

Cheers

Is it the engine management light that is on? ie, the orange light with a picure of an engine?
Or something else?
I'm not sure I understand.

Has a 1.9TD got an ecu? I didn't think so.
Suggest you post a pic of the light, someone will know

It's the engine light with what looks like a K in the middle of it.

It's got an ecu, it's a little basic but it's there. Like a lot of people, if it's not got points I'm screwed

The only thing that brought the K light up on my D8 was when both fans packed up and the air con was overheating. :?

Ooooooooh! thank reminds me of a problem we had with the wifes 306td, fans running oddly, overheating, stop light flickering on/off lots. Turns out one of the control packs under the passenger arch was soaked and was causing grief.

Time to find out where the 406 hides it then :)

i never realised any of the yellow lights on the dashboard actually went out on a 406, apart obviously from the airbag one, which is meant to flash constantly.

Hmm, got the light to go out for a bit this morning.

The car has always had a very slight miss which usually cleared once the engine had warmed up, once i've got the bonnet open i can hear it's got a bit worse. I disconnected the injector "read" wire, gave the engine a long rev at around 3k and the light went out and stayed out for ten minutes. Plugged the cable back in and waited and nothing happened.

Told the wife i was taking the car to get some bits from the motorfactors and as i walk to the car my eldest shouts that the light is back on! and the car is missing like a bitch :(

I cracked the 4th injector (the only one i can get to without stripping airpipes off) and it didn't make much difference to the engine miss, so i'm guessing i've got one or more dodgy injectors which is now causing enough trouble for the basic management to notice.

Time to hunt out a spare set of injectors so i can get this lot cleaned. (or find somebody selling a cleaned set of injectors ;))
