2.1TD very uneven tick-over NOW FIXED

Hi All
My 2.1 is not ticking over properly, it go's from 500 to 1500rpm and often stalls when pulling up at junctions, this started as just a small drop in revs every 3 or 4 seconds and just got worse.
I've changed the fuel filter, checked the intank strainer (clean) and resealed the fuel filter housing (it was sucking in air) bled the system and it's still the same.
tomorrow I'll change the fuel return pipe for a clear one so I can see if I have air coming out of the pump.
Has anyone got any other ideas for me to try ?

Can you give it a little throttle and hold the revs steady? If so it might be the throttle pot I guess...

Hi mjb
No it won't hold any revs below 1500rpm, but i have one from an HDI so I'll see if it's the same and give it a try just in case.

Maybe your home-brew fuel has done it? clogged injector?
I'd slosh in some V-Power diesel and a shot of Forte and take it for an "Italian Tune up".

If price is any guide it's not the same

Mine never got that bad but got hard to drive in traffic - needle lift sensor.

I've replaced the return pipe and have no air going into or out of the pump, so it's no fuel starvation or an air leak.
Steve, you're right throttle thing is not the same. Did the needle lift sensor sort your's out then, where on the pump is it and how hard was it to fit.

I do hope it's not my home brew as that's what my wife thinks and I would hate it if she was right
I've tryed the Italian job with no luck, plus it does 700 miles a week up the M way (which is why I brew my own at 16ppl) so not the sort of driving to let a injector block up and it got this bad within about 300ml.

I thought the 2.1 didn't like Bio-diesel or WVO?

It's actually part of the injector at the timing belt end (the one with the wire). Umm, what actually happened was I got a set of injectors but I couldn't get hold of a tool, so I ended up at a Bosch place and they diagnosed the needle lift sensor, changed that and the other injectors and it came back a different car.

I have been told there fine on well made bio (despite what diesel bob thinks) but don't even think about wvo unless it's properly twin tanked and you have very good oil.

I'll go and get a set from the scrappy tomorrow and see if that does it, if it does then I'll get the original ones referbished.

You're right mate, I've just been reading another site and and the Lucas epic goes into meltdown when run on bio
Just got back from the scrappy with another injection pump and will fit it tomorrow, at least it only cost me £65, NO more home brew in the 406 unless I can find a Bosch pump, injectors and pipes from a 605 or cit XM.
Thanks for all your surgestions guys.
