I can hear a faint tapping noise when I turn on the A/C, it sounds as though there's a stone stuck on the belt. My mechanic says that it needs regassing, is he right? because he was well off the mark with my exhaust!!

406 aircon should not start if gasless ... mine doesn't work because mine has a leak, not because the pump itself is dead

Could that be the compressor cutting in and out 'cos the gas is right on the pressure switch's threshold?

Good morning everyone :)

if the compressor is noisy/grumbly then it is 'scavenging' for gas and needs a service with new oil. If he noise rises and falls with revs then it's a sure sign.

Bare in mind though as to why it's low on gas - you may find it leaks under a pressure test and you'll be into an expensive repair so be prepared!

as welly says , my compressor was noisy due to lack of gas/lubricant ,
result was fooked bearings and seals requiring new compressor, main
stealer price £500/600  (i got a brand new one off fleabay for £95 :P )
