What should the mpg be - 1.8 Rapier

Hi,

Was wondering what mpg you guys get on your 406? Mine is a 1.8 Rapier and currently it is only giving me back around 25mpg and that is mostly motorway
driving! Mine is a MY2000.

Be interested to know what you get.

Cheers,
Steve

I've not owned a 1.8 but I'd expect 32+ on the motorway, probably a bit more.

You could check James's FAQ thread about running probs with the 1.8/2.0 maybe?

You could have a duff Oxygen sensor perhaps - is there more black soot than usual around the tail pipe?

It may be worth seeing a fuel injection specialist - to be honest even if it cost you £100.00 or whatever you'd soon recover the cost in better mpg's !!!

Also check your tyre pressures - they should be 34psi or 2.3bar, this can make a huge difference - you may even squib a bit more in but be carefull.

Thanks,

Exhaust tail pipe is very rust at the back, somebody did mention maybe the cat is bust?

Tyres are all fine, had them balanced yesterday, it does need new discs and pads at the front so maybe this may cause some of the bad mpg?

Was thinking it could be bad coolant sensor to the ecu?

Cheers

Thats well shocking,Ive got a 51 plate 1.8 (1749) and If I dont average atleast 37/38 then I know theres a problem. It hardly ever goes out of town either.
Out of town driving it gets over 40mpg avg.

Yeah, I thought it was shocking too, unless my math is wrong? I put £30.00 in, about 32ltrs, and get 180 miles, thought I
should be getting about 220?

Car seems to be running fine, exhaust checked today and it is fine. Had the front pads and discs done today as they were well
knackered ( car kepts juddering badly when braking ) - wonder if this may help? Car RPM when not moving is about 850-900 RPM which
seems fine?

Any advice on how I could get the mpg better is appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

I used to average around 38mpg on my P-reg 1.8 (according to the trip comp!)

Hi,

How many litres is the tank on the 1.8 Rapier? Seemed to have filled up from empty on £47.00 ( around 50ltrs ), is it a
50 litre tank?

I've just added some Redex, hoping that may help, although I'm more than hoping that the discs and pads being
changed today help, just hope the old ones where binding!

I'm pretty sure all the 406s have 70 litre tanks.

My 1.8 used to do 28 when I first got it, then I adjusted my driving style a bit and got it up to a regular 32/33. On a long run it would do between 38 and 42.

Hi,

70 litres? Well, mine reported full tank on 50 litres of fuel? Could my fuel gauge be faulty??

I'm driving the car like miss Daisy at the moment so would be expecting to get decent mpg from her.

Regards,
Steve

Should say the tank capacity in the handbook. I got 69.5l in mine yesterday, but the light had been on for about 35 miles and the trip computer was saying "----" miles left  The most I've ever got in in one go was 72l (sloping forecourt facing downhill) although some on here have reported up to 78l, I reckon they were at thet Tescos with the out of calibration pumps

Hi,

Quite strange mine is being filled up on just under 50 litres?? Do you think the fuel gauge could be wrong?

Cheers,
Steve

Have we been asked the mpg on a 1.8 before? I know we have countless times on an HDi, that search button just isn't big enough.
