Hello,i have a 1997 406 executive estate 137000 miles, that i love driving but the aux belt broke last monday and with the bank holiday and my mobile mechanic not having the right kit it only got finished yesterday but now i have been left with this grinding sound which my mechanic says its something to do with the fluid in the power steering because its been sat for a week? and it should go after its been drove round for a week or so? also he only did the belt but a friends son said he should have changed the tensioner and roller? more worried about the grinding will it go or is it something more serious?

That's a new one to me!

Methinks he's talking out of his arse! My thinking is the snapping belt may have damaged something. Check the cambelt cover for signs of cracking first of all

Depends on what engine you've got in it, but generally no.

Only as a precaution, unless they're already goosed (enough to throw your aux belt off?)
Your mechanic is a monkey.

Welcome Jenny!
The bearings in the alternator might have given up, either that or the aux belt tensioner.
Your mechanic is telling you porky pies! Fluid settling my arse
The only way to tell is to take off the aux belt again & turn each component by hand; either that or hold a screwdriver on the alternator & see if you can hear the squeal!

Any grinding is a bad sign, the best way to tell is remove the belt and start the engine and see if it's still making the noise. As mentioned before, faulty pulley or alternator is possibly the cause for the belt snapping. The mobile mechanic should of checked this at time of fitting a new belt... Sounds like a bit of a cowboy
Hope you get is sorted

Hi,
i hope you dont mind me just jumping in here but whilst everyone is on this topic. could the tensioner actually make a grinding/knocking noise? Its just as my 406 is currently suffering from this. Its only ocasional and it lasts for a few minutes. I am going to book it into a garage later on today but i wanted to make sure i was trying the right thing.
Many Thanks

If the bearings were seizing it is possible; mine was ok but I changed it anyway as I got a replacement with a job lot of parts. Alternator seems to be the main culprit.

Hi, My peugeot was in the garage today and they did a fan belt replacement. they said that the tensioner didn't need replacing and they checked all of the other pulleys but they all seemed fine. i dont know if the problem will happen again but i am not to convinced that the problem has been resolved. does anyone else know what the ploblem may be?
Cheers

Have you got aircon? Did they check the alternator? Have you run the car without the aux belt to see if the noise disappears?
