Was in portsmouth yesterday. was just about to leave, turned the key.....nothing
ah immobilser i thought, no
battery, fully charged

starter motor i guessed but i really dont know
the dash lights come on ok and operate as they should

i have had a whining through my radio that goes with the revs
i think that the starter cog has stuck and burned out the motor
how do i test this??

also i was told the solenoid might have gone, forgive my naivety, but is that the cylinder on the side of the starter or somewhere else? and how could i test this?

I am not hearing any click (like relays) when i turn the key, but electrics are fine, although it could be a fuse i suppose. no manial so i dont even know what fuse number it is. and haynes is as useful as a catholic condom on this subject.

Also if the problem was the TDC sensor would you expect the engine to turn then fail to start or does the ECU decide it wont start (or even turn at all) becaue of the danger to damage the block??? I will check this in the morning

Any help, however little would be great, bought this car as a cheap runner and its bleeding me at the moment :(

similar thing happened to me when I re-fix the set of wire connectors under the battery after cleaning. Had to remove it again and re-fit it tight to make sure the engine cranks. Symptoms were similar, all dash lights were on it's just that engine won't crank. And as you guessed if it is TDC sensor or immobilizer, then engine cranks but won't start. Check fuses, relays and possible wire connection failures.
