Has anyone got any knowledge or experience of doing a six speed conversion on a 406? I've helped a friend fit a 6-speed BE box from a 306 into a 205 gti, and thought that it would give my 406 V6 even longer legs, but I'm not sure what type of box is fitted, and what other issues are involved.

Will the six be strong enough to cope with the v6 ?

The GTi6 gearbox wouldn't fit I don't think, however I think there are some 407's (possibly the V6 diesels) which come with 6 speed gearboxes. This should be a closer match than a BE gearbox.

Crossed my mind too: 00002222YW NEW MEC GEARBOX (ML6 CL) £3,121.80
This is the 6-speed fitted to 407 v6 petrols & 2.0/2.2 diesels, (though the final draive ratios vary a bit).
Looks like early v6 HDi's were 5-speed and later ones are all autos.

I found two 407 6-speed boxes on Ebay at £495 and £650 - still quite a large investment if it doesn't fit! I'm familiar with the designations of gearboxes in smaller Peugeots, e.g. MA, BE3, but I'm not sure what the designation of the 406 V6 gearbox or the 407 6-speed. Since there's a 6-speed version of the BE box fitted to the 306, I wondered if the 407 box might be a development of the 406 V6 one. Anyone out there got access to info which would prove or disprove this theory?

All high torque 406's, (2.2, 3.0, 3.0 vvt, Hdi 110 & 136), use either the ML5T or ML5C gearbox.
(Looks like the ML5C is simply the later version as it's fitted with the same engines, apart from the original 3.0).
My guess is the ML6 CJ / CL is the 6-speed equivalent for the 407.
It's used with the following engines:
ML6 CJ - EW12J4 (2.2 petrol)?
ML6 CL - DW10BTED4 (2.0 16v HDi 136)?
ML6 CL - DW12BTED4 (2.2 16v HDi 170)?
There's also a mention of an 'ES9A AND BVM6' - I think this is just a generic term, 'Boîte de Vitesse Manuelle 6'
Do you know which cars the ones on fleabay came from?

If you are wanting a BE3 6 Speed out of a GTI-6...
A) They have very short ratios. It will rev its tits off on the motorway.
B) It probably wont mate up to the V6.

Finally thought to look at my 'official' Peugeot 406 Coupé CD manual - for both D8 and D9 models the manual gearbox for the 3.0 litre is the 'ML5T'. I can't find any reference to any 406 having a 6-speed box. So the 407 route seems the best one, but I wonder if anyone has seem both types 'in the metal' and could say if they are at least externally similar. Then there's the little question of final drive ratios, electronic speedo readouts and hydraulic or cable clutch! I've had a look, hoping to find a 407 workshop manual either on CD or in book form, but no luck; anyone out there know different, or have experience of working on 407s?
Afraid I might have misled some people with reference to the BE3/5 and BE3/6 boxes; I agree they would not be compatible with the V6 engine, but I was floating the idea that Monsieur Peugeot might have followed the same development plan, with the ML5T developing into the ML6T.
