hello everyone,
Can anyone tell me if their HDI smokes a bit when changing gear or just starting off.....ive followed mine and noticed these little puffs of smoke when it was going thro the gears.
Anyone tell me if its normal ? and what it is causing this to happen ?..and can i do anything to solve it ?
Cheers

All diesels smoke a little from time to time, is it excessive ?
If so, check to see if your airfilter is filthy, if it is, renew it.
Failing that, change the fuel filter, pour a bottle of injector cleaner into the fuel tank & give it a good blast in 3rd gear on a quiet section of road. Let it rev as hard as it can go & watch the reek pour out the exhaust.
That should clear after a mile or so.
Drive normally on the may home.

as above , a good blast on a long uphill section of road is my favorite, its surprising the diference it can make.

EGR valve would be my favourite here. Mine used to smoke UNTIL I had it changed and then it was much much better.
(the egr opens and closes at low throttle and when you're on/off the gas but if it's leaking it won't recirculate properly).
The egr should be able to close tightly when you hit the gas but if it's dirty/sticking open then too much recirculation will take place and starve the engine of oxygen causing incomplete combustion (smoke).
Have a look around the egr for black soot and carefully have a sniff around whilst blipping the gas - if you smell exhaust fumes then it's leaking.

Can't you just bypass the EGR on the pug engines ?

Hi,
I'm hoping to bypass this on mine but still working out how to.
On the mondeos they put things like ball bearings in the vacuum supply pipes to stop them operating.

Dunno if this helps or not

Thanks guys, I will take it for a good clear out up the road first then look into egr valve side......she seems a little jumpy on tickover too...any ideas if its linked...can feel the jumpy tickover thro my seat if i sit on the drive a while

just to add a note on this, i have pulled apart 2 hdi 110 's recently to sell as parts. on both engines the egr contained a fair amount of water, ie perhaps 1/2 pint !

this cant help matters. also on both , there was a large buildup of oily gunge in the inlet manifold. i think a strip / clean of this area would benefit a lot of these engines

I think that's always going to be the case with any higher mileage car. There's lots of microscopic particles that can get through air filters, and a lot of engines feed oil vapours up into the air intake all of which leads to lots of gunk. This is why I've just had to perform my third ICV clean

HI,
Some pix of EGR valve blocking.
I've had no warning lamps illuminating with this procedure.
I'm also getting slightly and I mean slightly better fuel economy but better low revs response which for me
is more important as I need this for the taxi-ing with the extra load on the vehicle.Cooler running also.

First I disconnected the original vacuum pipe at the green arrow.
This is on the middle of the three solenoids
I then used a bit of old D8 vacuum pipe with the end blocked off tightly with a bolt ,red arrow, to maintain servo pressure
which goes on the solenoid valve in its place.
The blue arrow is the original pipe which can be replaced if ever I need to put the pipework back to original.

This is the left of the three solenoids.
When I disconnect this (orange arrow) the performance drops dramatically as its a vacuum supply towards the turbocharger.
I'm getting a very noticeable hiss from the turbo area, when connected, at low engine, full throttle speeds which is annoying and not the healthy faint whistle you'd normally get . Above 3000rpm at full pelt it goes.
So when this pipe (green arrow) which disappears deep down the back is disconnected the hiss is erradicated
which makes me suspect the turbo wastgate vacuum valve is buggered. Can anyone confirm this might be the case ? And how easy is it to do.?
I really dont want to replace the turbo as it is still functioning correctly apart from this annoying noise.

I would say it's just the vac hose itself that's leaking and making a noise. It rubs on something near the EGR as it drops below and I always kept an eye on mine as it had worn through the outer sleeving already but looked a PITA to replace.

Fairly sure the ECU can tell if it doesn't have continuity through the electrical solenoid valve coils, but otherwise has no way of knowing if the EGR system's working or not.
