Hey,

sometimes i have problems selecting reverse gear, it doesnt engage correctly and just whines, is this a common problem?

i wonder if i'm going into reverse too quickly, read somewhere that its best to pause for a second or two with the clutch down before going into reverse.

or is it a sign that the box is starting to go?? i could do without changing the gearbox really

Yeah normally you have to wait until the engine speed reaches idle before selecting reverse. 406 'boxes are not known to fail, so don't worry about it - helps to do an oil change now and again though.

I have problems selecting reverse, due to, what I believe, crap cable linkage. Really need to take a look at that one day.

I've always found it best to throw the lever to reverse and keep mild pressure on it while releasing the clutch. As you hit bite point it'll slide the rest of the way into reverse

I sometimes have to double de-clutch to get reverse Matt, I wouldn't worry too much about it :)

Or, teamy, you could just stop the car before slamming it in reverse? :P
