a couple of niggles

Hi, Only my 2nd post on here so be gentle with me. I have a 2002 406 hdi 110 executive it has 155k on the clock. The problems i have is when i 1st purchased it it was a poor starter if i would have paid more than the £1030 i paid for it i would have walked away from it, anyway i gave it a service oil, all filters new auxillary belt (snapped 2 days after i bought the car )and a can of forte injection cleaner added straight to the fuel filter and the remainder of the forte to the fuel tank. It is starting better now but still not perfect, my wife owns a 2001 Picasso hdi and the 406 starts no where near as good as the Picasso. Any ideas what the starting problem maybe...(injectors, fuel pump etc etc ?????). The 2nd problem i have is when i put my ignition on i cannot see the oil pressure light lighting up, i realise there are no bulbs in the dash (learnt the hard way when went to replace it) so could it be the oil pressure sensor has been disconnected and if so where would i find it. Finally i can here a slight ticking when it first starts could that be a dodgy injectors ?....Thanks in advance...Colin

There could be a fault with the lift pump, have a search as there are quite a few posts on that.

The two main suspects are the low pressure fuel pump (lift pump) under the back seat and the glow plugs could be on the way out. Also, looks like your oil pressure sensor is malfuctioning.

Sorry forgot to mention the glow plug were checked and are fine, where is the oil pressure sensor located ? thanks Colin

My money's on the LP pump in the fuel tank, also check the crankshaft pulley, the aux belt tensioner and idler for snapping belts. the crankshaft pulley sometimes comes loose off the crankshaft or splits into three (noisy when that happens).

Come to think of it, my oil pressuree warning light doesn't come on either
I noticed this when I changed the oil - now I'm wondering if this is normal?
Anyone with a later D9 HDi got an oil presure warning light that works?
I checked the manual - it shows the same dash layout for both petrol & diesel, so you can't be sure, (I'm fairly certain the particle filter blocked light won't work on a petrol for example)!
Manual's a tad misleading too as the technical spec lists a V6 16V - honestly

My Parants 306 had problems starting and that was the fuel lift pump
I assume you listen for it when you turn the ignition on (with the backseats lifted)

Also i think the oil pressure sensor is screwed into the block under the fuel filter. You
can just see it throgh a small gap

Strange, when the lift pump decides to go on strike then the starter will spin over for ages with no joy but I'm thinking this guy's saying it's slow to start as in it always fires but takes a few revolutions of the starter each time as if he's having to coax the thing to life.

Mine used to go: wah wah wah wah wah.......Kalang alanga alanga sorry, what I mean is it made like 5 revolutions or pulses of the starter motor each time whether hot or cold it was always the same.

Poor starting on a HDi can be down to low rail pressure (injection pressure) due to a worn HP pump. I'd be tempted to get to a garage you can trust with a recent up-to date diagnostic machine to read the live rail pressure or other stored faults (298bar at idle appears to be the benchmark of a HDi in fine order, rising to 600+ when revs increase etc.)

Thanks for all your advice guys, just been onto my mate who works in a breakers yard and they have a working fuel pump from a 2003 HDI 110 bhp which has been written off, the best part is I can take it away and try it to make sure that the pump is the problem. Obviously the next question is how easy is it to fit a pump and is there anything else I will need to purchase before fitting. I know you remove the rear seat and lift the black round inspection cover but then what ? Also regarding the oil pressure switch seems to be a few of you who have the same problem as myself with no light on the dash so the question is do the D9 actually have this function as i don't want to be crawling around underneath looking for something that actually does not exist....thanks for all your help on this matter it is very much appreciated and if I can sort these 2 problems out its just a case of a replacement front offside wheel arch liner and sort out the dreaded rust on front of the bonnet (seems to be a common fault with newer 406's which is amazing for a 7 year old car)....Regards and thanks ...Colin

There's a thread somewhere showing a link to a tool you need to get the ring off the fuel pump but you should listen for this pump to see if it sounds 'grumbly' when you put the key to ignition. If it sounds horrible and grumbles then it's knackered. Also the black inspection cover was rivetted on mine (not sure how the garage got it off but drilling out rivets near the top of a plastic tank......you know).

I'm sure my 1999 HDi had the traditional 'oil can' warning but I'm wondering if the later models just show the 'STOP' light?

Thanks for the reply...Firstly font now Black....secondly i will have a good listen to the pump shortly but if i remember it does not sound too healthy , i will look on here for the link to the tool needed i actually asked 2 mates who both have later model 406 and neither of them had a oil pressure light, now either theres none on the d9 models of a whole lot of dodgy sensors ...Regards Colin
