labour times

could any of you guys help me with labour times, as per my previous thread you will know i've snapped my cam, now i dont mind doing cambelts or even changing the cam etc but i fear some valves may be bent, while passing the local breakers i noticed he had a damaged 406 in, it turns out the owner only had the head done 11k ago, the receipt is there for the full re con, the breaker has told me i can have the head complete with cam for £100, is that a fair price?
Now for the main question how long should it take a pug experienced fitter to change the head over?, i have spoken to the local mobile mechanic and he is saying it should take 3 days @£120 per day, that seems a long time to me, can anyone advise on how long it normally takes?
wish had the confidence to do it myself as all the parts would be about £170 job done but been told the manifolds are a total nightmare to get off

Yes, the manifold bolts are an absolute pig to remove and refit, you have to remove the studs from the head before you can lift up the head.

£100 for a head is a very good price.

£360 labour isn't that bad.

maybe thats why he's trying to talk me into using the head thats on the car and replacing the valves that are bent (if any), said that its easier to leave turbo etc on
the head was only done in the last 20k

Whether you use your original head or the replacement, the job is exactly the same except for replacing valves on the original.

The last one of these I did (a long while back), all 8 valves had bent, along with the broken camshaft, my local engine recon place sold me a second hand cam.

The turbo stays connected to the manifold, what you have to do is to remove the nuts on the studs and fit 2 nuts and lock them together, then undo the whole stud, if you are lucky, the stud will come out, the long winded way of removing the studs, is to take off all the manifold nuts, pull back the manifold with a big screwdriver and turn the studs with molegrips attached....like I said, a real pain.

no its a 1.9, is just the guy said he can take head off with manifolds on and replace the bent valves etc and refit with new gasket and second hand cam

Good luck to him if he wants to do it that way.

One thing I would insist on is a genuine Peugeot head gasket, it's very important for the 1.9 engine, the old gasket has cut-outs on the edge to match it up.They will need your chassis number as well.

You can sometimes get away with just changing the cam and lockating lugs (what ever they are called) as the valves on the 1.9 are vertical and all the forces go straght upwards, I'd remove the cam ect and see if all the vales can be pushed up and down and snap shut nicely, if they do they shouldn't be bent and wont need replaceing.
I've not done this myself (allways change the belt when I get a new car no mater what the service history said) but it has been done on http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk just have a search on there for more info.
