Noise when in gear

Hi all,

Its been a while since i've had to post, but its that time again.

My 2.1 TD LX is making a weird noise when in gear.

At first I thought it was the bottom pulley but I noticed that when driving, it was noticeably louder until I dropped the clutch when it disappeared.

Any idea's? The car's soon going in to get a fair bit done, just wondering how much it will add to the bill :(

Cheers

Could be the gearbox is in need of an oil change. Are you sure it's the gear box that's making a noise and not the engine under load?

I only noticed it when the car is in gear. Even at low speeds.

The amount of money I've spent on the car is now almost double, if not treble the amount I paid for it.

Getting expensive :(

Thanks for getting back

Could be something to do with the clutch, thrust bearing maybe?

I feel your pain, I reckon I've spent about £800 putting mine right, bought it for £500 2 years ago

I thought the thrust bearing too...

I'm prepared to once pay what I paid to get the car healthy again. Anything more, its getting sold/scrapped.

Is it all gears or just the one?
I had a similar problem with a 406 I once drove for someone. It only did it in third, turned out it was the nut coming off the first motion shaft

I was read a post the other day on a 205 forum about gearbox's and nuts being loose. Apparently when certain gearbox's were built, nuts on the shafts weren't tight enough causing them to come undone and strip the shaft. Not saying this is the case with yours thought.... Does it do it when engaging gears with clutch in or just driving?

Is the BE3 gearbox fitted to a 406? I know the diff's can be a bit dodgy sometimes... One has exploded on me, but that was a BE1

Thanks,
Dan

I've had a diff go, it was at 287,000 though.
Heck, I've just realised that's in 80,000 miles time in this car - best get saving
On the one with the loose first motion shaft nut loose, it didn't strip the shaft and after tightening (and most probably loctiting) it continued being worked almost 24/7 for another year before being written off.

From what I can tell it does it when ever the clutch is engaged.

I'll end up scraping it if it costs me too much.

It could the bearing on the input shaft on the gearbox. I had this on a BE3 box I put on my 205.... Is it like a whiring noise? Press the clutch and you hear the noise, release the clutch and it goes?

Nope, the noise is only apparent when the clutch is fully out (either in gear or in neutral).

Thrust bearing. If you shop around, you can get the whole clutch changed for under £200 :supafrisk:

Luckily, my car is looked after by a Peugeot specialist who I get a great discount off of the work.

So, bushes, suspension (if its not the bushes), bottom pulley, door and 4 brand new tyres.

Ho hum...
