406 fuel pressure.

Post by pugmaniac »

Hi guy`s, can anyone tell me the mimimum fuel pressure needed to start a w reg 406.
the scanner i am using is a peugeot planet 2000 system, and it tells me the difference between fuel pressure needed, and fuel pressure recommended is 159 bars, is this enough.

there are no fault codes, but still no start

Is it an HDi? - I'm guessing yes...
I can't remember the exact figure, but I think you should have about 250 Bar at idle, rising to 1350 at high revs. Fuel pressure at cranking speed has to be lower than 250 and if it says you have 159 Bar LESS than you should, that sounds like you have no pressure at all.
Common fault on these cars is low pressure pump failure - disconnect the pipe going into the filter, flick the ignition on briefly and see if there's any fuel being pumped from the tank.

yes it is a hdi 90, on a w plate, crank pulley snapped, ruined the head, when the belt snapped, new head fitted (and belt) new cam sensor fitted and gapped.
but engine will not start, not even a caugh, it runs on plus gas, but as you would expect, sounds rough,

bought the pps system from a garage that went under, the owner didnt realize the importance of such a device, as far as he was concearned it was a battered old laptop, it does do lots of things, but it`s only drawback is it will not give you a simple answer to a simple question, then again it is french.

back to the car, the laptop gives you all the live data, but leave`s out the reason for a non-start, the only fault code i have seen is a egr code,

I had a problem with my previous Citreon HDi 90, which had lost the supply for the L/P pump & egr valve etc. It wouldn't run because of no fuel & when connected to some other diagnostic scanner, displayed a faulty EGR valve message. The same power supply to the ECU worked both items. Strangely enough the pump fuse was between ECU & motor, so I put a 12V feed on the pump end of the fuse holder & it started.

Does your L/P pump work?

On some HDi90's....mine for example, there is a plastic manual pump for pumping up the fuel after a filter change and also for bleeding the fuel system, if yours has this type, you may have air in the fuel system, mine was a real pig to bleed last time I changed the filter, took me ages to get the car started....it only got bled by moving the car to point downhill to make the fuel flow better, therefore helping bleed the system.

On others, like the 110, the pump forces fuel into the filter and completes the bleeding, if yours is this type, as Doggy said, check the pump.

I find it easiest to test the pump by pulling off the inlet pipe to the filter with the ignition on, if it's working, fuel will gush out very fast.

Plastic hand pump as above on my 406 HDi 90.

Just remembered, some Hdi 90's have Seimens systems and no L/P pump, I think

Is that what yours is, jasper?
