406 D8 Diesel 2.0 - Wont start when hot

Hi,

I own a 406 D8 diesel. Its the 2.0 liter model. I know usually diesels tend to be hard to start when the engine is cold but my problem is totally the other way around.

It starts when I crank it for 2 3 seconds when cold (after pre heating of course) but when the engine is hot it either starts after a cranking for about 7-10 seconds or simply refuse to start.... :?

Of course every thing gets back to normal when the engine cools down....

Anyway after starting it runs without a problem (idle at a steady 900-1000rpm). Though sometimes i feel there's very little power from 1000-2000rpm Sad

Has any one else experience similar problems???? :? Confused Help please

Hi guys,

I removed the diesel filter and cleaned and refixed the filter. There was some dirt in trapped in the filter. Probably from the tank. The car was sitting for a long time i guess..... Anyway this didnt fix the problem....still wont start when the engine temp is above 80degrees..

Last night some thing strange happened....I switched off the engine took out the ignition key and went inside my home. Then i came back to the car after few minutes, only to find that the radiator cooling fans are working.... Everything was turned off and the ignition key was in my hands :?

Whats going on guys...I'm thinking the temperature sensor or the cooling fan control unit (if there is such a thing) is giving trouble?? Please help

Hi guys,

I noticed that the hand pump for the diesel bleeding process is sort of squashed. :? see the attached photo... I couldn't find any leaks or anything...Whats the reason for this??? I thought maybe the fuel supply line was blocked. But it didn't take the right shape when i removed the pipe from the filter end.

I suspect you've got a blocked strainer in your fuel tank - see this thread

Could also be a partial blockage in the fuel line / squashed pipe or similar.

Yours looks like a 1.9TD BTW - (this could have confused the issue a little and might be why no-one responded sooner).

Welcome to the forum 8)

Hey thanks for the info....can you point me as to how to remove the fuel gauge/pick up unit from the fuel tank...I had a feeling there might be a blockage because the hand pump collapsed. Also the the fuel gauge is give strange readings...some times it actually shows an increase in fuel

BTW i removed and cleaned the fuel filter as well (couldn't buy one over the weekend :frown: ) there was lot of dirt inside. i've attached a pic how it looked inside

Pick up a Haynes manual, pretty common on Ebay and handy for these kinds of jobs.

Short answer is you have to whip out the back seat. Pick up is on the driver's side IIRC. The 1.9 doesn't have a pump in the tank so all you should have to extract is the level sender and pick up bits.
