Spied a 2.2 SRi - Question

Hi all,

I've spotted a 2000 X-Reg 2.2 SRi Saloon, and it looks a cracker; 42,000 on the clock, and £1600 is the price. I want to go for it, but I need to ask (for insurance):

Which SRi models were fitted with turbocharged engines?

Cheapest insurance quote I've got thus far has been £779.58 with Elephant.co.uk (my current insurer). This represents a hike of more than £100 p/a for insurance. I'm going to call them and see if they will bring this price down, but I want to know for certain that the car I'm looking at isn't turbocharged (see if this helps with the insurance premiums).

Cheers
Graeme

No turbo on the 2.2 but it's a gutsy thing with twin cam/16valves and 160bhp

Very reliable and can be economical too.

SRi Turbo's finished when D8's finished.

Sounds a good price with the low mileage.

Have a read of this, sounds a decent package to me (and others have said the same) especially the torquey nature of the engine.....http://www.mcroston.co.uk/peugeot_406_sri.php

Wow, sounds like a bargain at 42k miles - a lot of HDi 406's have been going for bigger money than normal lately... :?

Not sure about the economy but liking the rest :)

It does sound like a cracker Graeme! As the other guys mentioned it was only the D8 2 litre 8v petrol that had a turbo :)

OK, thanks for your help - the "no turbo" knowledge made a difference. I am excited about this, it seems realistic that I will be able to afford switching to this motor (and it's my birthday at the end of this month, which will help).

Elephant say they would add £30 per month to my current premium if I changed the car, and then when I am up for renewal in November, I should have 1 years' no-claims bonus (fingers crossed I don't crash by then), and will be 29, so things ought to come down a bit at that point.

Now I need to ask the dealer how much trade-in I can get for the current 406. Which Car reckons it's worth around £900 for trade-in, but mine is pretty much in mint condition, and has genuine Peugeot alloys fitted, plus it's just been serviced and had new brake pads/discs, spark plugs, filters, etc etc.

Then if I'm happy, I've got to convince the Treasury Office (aka Mrs Highlander) ...  :supafrisk:

Oh gees, it was sounding so good until now :(

I wouldn't hold your breath for a fair deal at the moment (I got offered £375.00 but later sold it myself for £1,150.00).

I had to buy the Volvo and then sell the 406 but they're easy to sell if you get the add and price correct. It's just whether you can afford to buy before you sell :|

 Did I mention I'm not the brightest bulb in the pack?

Probably can't afford to buy before I sell, but the guy from the garage is going to give me a call tomorrow to talk about this. Dealers round this neck of the woods tend to be happy to negotiate and are reasonably good at giving discount if talked at properly (my colleague just bought a 3-year-old Hyundai Coupe this week, and haggled a third of the cost off the motor, plus more trade-in for his 10-year-old Skoda Octavia than they originally offered, plus a lower deposit).

If I don't like what he says, I'll try advertising my car and see if I get any interest in it. I will want to take that one for a test drive before I agree to anything though.

Wait... I'm confused.

I thought the only 2.2 was the 136 HDi. And AFAIK that's got a turbo. Is there a 2.2 n/a petrol, then?

No, the SRi 2.2 is a 4 inline cylinder DOHC with 16 valves. Basically, a bigger version of the same engine I have, that produces 50 more horses.

From what I have found on the web, the 2.2 petrol was introduced to the 406 range in 2000, having originally been developed for the 607.

UPDATE: I got a "meh, whatever" kind of response from the Treasury when I asked her about it. So I think I'll probably be off to Dunfermline to see it on Sunday. The switch to this slightly newer motor definitely hasn't been ruled out, but I think I may need to offer some type of designer handbag as a peace offering. The suggestion of a quick trip to the Louis Vuitton shop in Edinburgh for our anniversary in November may do the trick...

Bloody marvellous! So long as she doesn't change her mind!

Don't know what it's like in the Silver City now - I was a Teuchter myself at one time !!! - but down here, the dealers are only offering an average of auction prices for a trade in.

I see. Somehow I've managed to never hear of this engine. Oh well, every day's a school day I suppose. Except not today, cos it's Saturday and I'm watching cartoons in my jim-jams.

Thanks for info peeps.

'Tis a sad day, dear friends, when I must refer to a 406 as a shed.

Went to see the SRi yesterday, and she was in dire condition. Bits of trim weren't just hanging off, they were gone. The aircon didn't blow cold. The paintwork was scratched. The electric windows were really, really slow and jerky when moving (and nearly didn't close once opened). I actually peeled off a square inch of the exhaust backbox with my thumb, it was so badly rusted. The chrome exhaust outlet was so dull it looked like my steel one. And the engine, while it revved quickly and well, right up to 5000 RPM (in neutral), started revving OF ITS OWN ACCORD, without me even being in the car (let alone on the pedals).

I didn't even take her out for a test drive. Bloke was saying MY CAR wasn't worth the £1200 I was asking for it. I had to tell him that his wasn't worth the £700 he was offering me for mine.

Broke my heart, that did.

If I'd bought it, I'd have had to replace the exhaust, re-gas the aircon (and potentially sort out any leaks or faults with the system), get the electric window motors replaced, touch up the paintwork, and sort out whatever was causing the engine to rev. Bugger that.

So I went off to North Queensferry and took some photos of the Forth Rail Bridge instead. Much nicer day out after that.

Oh dear, sounds like a lucky escape to me.

Some cars are just not worth the bother. I went to see an LX before I bought mine and that was a shed (walk away).

That 2.2 sounds like it hasn't been cared for, at all. You did the right thing but it's annoying all the same.

You'd really need a nice private low-miler with one owner etc.. 8)
