EGR Removal or Blanking?

Been reading A LOT of information regarding this on the HDi.

Basically, I want to try it but fear a check engine light (New to pugs and dont fancy going to the stealers if this happens)

Basically, my car is a 2000 "W" Reg with Bosch ECU and is the 90hp HDi Variant.

How would I go about disabling the EGR?

Ive read about just disconnecting the blue plug on the EGR actuator?

Or unplug the hose at the EGR or Actuator End and pop a bolt into it to block it?

You're much safer with the 2nd option - disconnect & plug the vacuum hose. ECU can't tell if the EGR's working, but it will give an error if it's disconnected from any of the solenoid valves.

Okay thanks.

So the EGR is the disc shaped thing on the exhaust, the EGR actuator is the black box on the bulk head with hoses attached.

One from the EGR and 2 going down the back of the engine, Turbo??

Would I take the hose off the EGR and block the hose end thats come of the egr?

As taking the hose of the actuator and blocking the hose after the EGR will cause a vacuum leak at the actuator?

Sorry, im still learning a lot of Diesels especially the HDi...

Loads of people on there with tuned up 306 HDi 90's. Im sure you will find the infomation you crave :)

Thats where ive come from lol.

Im just wary of the MIL light coming on and have nothing definitive as to which end of the hose to remove and block lol or maybe im been thick which would not suprise me :mrgreen: :lol:

Hello Bruce,

You will find my post on TDOCUK.COM in the "How to" section regardind removal of the EGR - same user name.

I ran with it disconnected for about 6 months and then another 6 months or so blanked at either end. I have now removed it.

Mine is the 90 BHP Siemens system. I have for about 75% of the time have the EML on, recording an EGR fault - I ignore it. Every couple of months or so, the car gets it into it's head to go into "limp" mode - 2000rpm or 50mph max - 4 or five restarts later and all is well again.

I use a Scangauge 2 to monitor the EOBD and it shows nothing other than the previously mentioned EML fault. On the upside, it is so much nicer/smoother to drive.

Hi Col,

From what I understand the Bosch ECU is less "sensitive" to EGR changes than the Siemens unit?

Anyway, here is an attached image of my 406 EGR Area.

EGR, Note black gunk around the EGR and the EGR itself, Leaking?

Where my confusion is happening is where do I remove the hose from and bung?

The EGR or Actuator?

If the EGR (Which I assume it is) wont the EGR still leak gas into the air?




Would I take the hose off the EGR and pop a bolt into the hose like this?

As I understand it - yes !!

When I ran mine disconnectd, I just removed the electrical connection from the solenoid. Now I have removed the EGR in it's entirety, where you might fit the bolt ( in your last picture) is now just tucked up into the bulkhead - not blocked or anything.
