We have had quite a few snapped springs, check around the bottom of the spring & you'll probably see the break or a doubled up coil.
I did one a couple of weekends back, careful with those spring compressors!

I don't think you need one for a rear. Strange, more often than not it's a front spring that goes...

Did the recovery guy tell you which spring it was ?? did he see where it had snapped ??
if you have checked thoroughly and cannot see anything you may have suffered something
that occasionally happens with my car, when i park and pull the handbrake on get out and
later return and get in the car i hear a bang very rarely this happens and i found it to be
the handbrake , when i pulled it on it must not have quite engaged and when i get back in the
extra movement or weight makes it drop a notch with a loud bang

Hold on there Pugster, sounds like a knackdid ratshit to me

I'd say watch out for it doing a Passat (i.e. rolling away merrily down the hill with no-one inside it) but I'd think you leave it in gear anyway.

upon further investigation both back wheels off both springs antiroll bar link rods etc checked i even checked the drums and i believe you may be right about the handbrake slipping thanks for all the help guys once again fantastic advice and suggestions

Hmmm... The bang could be the pads/shoes sticking to the disk/drum (via rusting to it). I had that before with my 1st '6 if it had been parked for a few weeks etc...
