Unplug the stepper and see if the idling goes any rougher. If it doesn't change then it may well be sh@gged.
Failing that you could check the MAP sensor & Lambda sensor

Hows it goin. I had the same problem and i think ive finally sorted it. Mine started playing up after it went for the mot wash. I tried cleaning out the stepper motor but this seemed to make it worse. At one stage it was sticking all the way out and wasnt alloying the car to start. I then replaced it for one I got in the breakers (£5 bargin, pug stealers wanted £90 for a new one.

) I cleaned out this one with wd40. I also cleaned the throttle body where the stepper motor goes into also. This sorted the erratic idle however as soon as the car got up to temperature it started playing up again. I decided i mite as well take the whole throttle body off and give it a good clean. In the process i took off the yellow sensor thats on the top (i assume this is a temp sensor) to my suprise and a little bit of relief it was covered in limescale. I simply cleaned off the crud from the sensor and the hole where it sits. I then gave the throttle body another clean and but everything back together and resyncronised it. Its now running grand. Hope this helps you.

I have quite an uneven lumpy idle on my 2.2 petrol. I also have a constant engine management light on. I got it checked at the garage while it had its mot and he cleared it. The lambada sensor was couple of the entries so not sure if it needs replacing or something else? Anyhow the engine management light came back on after about 5 miles and has stayed on 6 weeks now.
May have to get it read again and see if it is the lambad still I suppose.
