As subject says... what spanner size do I need to use for the oil sump bolt? I am pretty sure my biggest 18 one didn't fit and had to fiddle about with the adjustable one...

I'm sure it's under 20, that'll be 19 I guess.

21mm or 13/16th in old money. Same as old type spark plugs.

Could've sworn mine was a 10mm allen key - (or do 21mm sockets fit 'em too)?

I've got a square key thing with two ends, one goes 'in' the sump nut and the other end slots into a suitable socket. Most car shops sell them and refer to them as Peugeot/Citroen sump nut keys I think.

Hm, interesting - on my 2.1TD it was just a normal nut. I guess it's changed on an HDi...
Can I just use a 10mm allen key then instead of spending monies on a new ratchet set/spanner?

On my 2.0HDi the spanner size is 21mm, as it is on my Expert van Hdi, as it was on the fleet of 30 plus HDi vans that I used to service.
It is 21mm on my brother's 1.9td as well.It is even 21mm on the Ford Fiesta sump plugs (Peugeot Diesel engines).
Some of them have a 9mm square hole in the middle of the nut as well as being 21mm, as reported, there is a special square tool to fit this.
Both my vehicles have this square hole.
