turbo/egr issues?

Hello
Firstly i'd like to thank the people that have helped me before on this forum, very kind and very knowledgeable.
I'm currently having a problem- when i'm traveling with a couple of people in the car, up long hills etc the car goes into limp mode, what i'm wondering ( the cheap fault reader says its the turbo solenoid/wastegate ) i have changed the turbo previously (bad mechanic diagnosis) and i know that the actual waste valve can be adjusted, could adjusting this solve my problem? The annoying part is that it doesnt always happen and when i clear the code the car runs fine. I'm also investigating the Egr thingy as one of the times i disconnected the hoses (to make sure they were clean) and upon reconnecting the engine again ran fine. I'm a little confused.
Are there any easy tests to check the egr valves?
so many questions so little answers...lol
