Can anyone give me a rundown on how you remove a front cv joint from a 2001 HDI, I find the haynes a bit short on detail and I can be a bit thick sometimes. Any Help please

My understanding is that the CV joints on 406s can't be separated, so the short answer is undo the hub nut, drain the gearbox oil, split the ball joint, pull the driveshaft out. The o/s driveshaft is held in at the lower engine mount bracket too - you'll loosen the 2 nuts going parallel to the driveshaft then turn the bolts 180 degrees

Can't be separated? I think that only applies to the r/h drive shaft inner 'cos the intermediate bearing gets in the was or summink.

Remove the driveshaft as mjb said (the left hand one simply pulls out the gearbox).

I prefer to remove the bolt at the bottom of the strut to help in removing the driveshaft instead of the ball joint, but that's just my way.

If you are changing the CV boot, use a plastic hammer or block of wood and a big hammer and hit the metal outer casing of the CV joint and knock the CV joint off its shaft.

If you are replacing the CV joint itself, you could use the metal hammer against the CV joint casing to knock it off its shaft.

If changing the boot, clean out the CV joint bearings and repack them with CV joint grease.

Before fitting the CV joint back on, remove the metal clip carefully from the shaft, carefully squash the clip back into a round clip and gently refit it to the shaft, fit the new boot to the shaft, then gently fit the CV joint onto the splines at the end of the shaft, push the clip into the CV joint with a small screwdriver and after screwing the big nut onto the shaft, gently knock the CV joint back onto the shaft.
