Possible coolant sensor fault (green switch at right hand side of cylinder head, behind the air filter box), or cooling fan on the radiator not working.

The XU10J2TE has 2 CTSs (one for the ECU, one for the dash) and the ES9J4 and ES9J4S have 3 (ECU, dash, and dash warning light). Dunno about the HDi, but if there's multiple sensors then it won't be a CTS at fault unless both are knackered

Could be the thermostat stuck shut though?

or this - they like to die. It's easy to test on 406s - just unplug the CTS with the ignition on. If it doesn't move, chances are the fan motor's knackered or the relay(s) mounted in the shroud are gone.
