406 2.0 GLX Squealing fan belt or other?

Dear all,

First post here so hoping someone can help. I've done a search and have a rough idea but others thoughts would be appreciated :?

Just bought a 406 2.0 GLX (92k cambelt done at 72k) this weekend from a delaer (typical small selling from home deal) in a straight swop for the wifes megane for praticality. The issue is a squealing noise from the fan belt it would appear. Spraying with WD40 stops the noise but soon reappears. The dealer put some grease on the belt (presumably mistakenly!) and as such the squealing is worse/appeared. Actually pretty quiet/gone when not in gear but appears under load and constant when moving and goes when you dip clutch or stop. He has said that he will fix by getting local mechanic to put on a new belt but could this be the rollers/tensioners/bearing or something else? Only had the car 3 days so should be able to get him to fix and would like to get sorted quickly.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers,

Giles.

I dont think spraying the belt with wd 40 is a good idea it is a lubricant .Best let him change the fanbelt and take it from there

But WD is good for diagnosis - the belt is obviously too loose or knackered. Putting grease on it used to be a kind of "get you home" measure, it stops it squealing for longer but that's it.
