Poor turbo boost?

Hi all
I bought a 2003 GLX HDI 110 a few weeks ago and I am loving it! I have however a little issue. When I bought the car I was ecstatic at the power, when it got to about 2000rpm the turbo kicked in and properly kicked me into my seat. After a few days however the boost disappeared on a run and I was struggling to get the car up to 50mph.
I cleaned the MAF as it was black and I've now got a nice smooth band of power all the way through to 4500rpm BUT no real noticeable turbo kick (although I am getting up to speed no problems I know the car can do more!)
I found that the MAF? sensor (comes on the intercooler top pipe with Denso on it?) had a broken pipe, I glued it all back together and power is again improved BUT still not quite what it was.
I can't see any split hoses
Any ideas?
finally, I have 0% skill with cars
P.S. hello i'm new ;)
