Hi guys,

My pug has started making a metallic ringing, almost a jangling noice when revved when stationary.

It seems to be from the drivers side of the engine.

Sound like bottom pulley to you guys?????

Its had a new aux tensioner and damper about 6 months ago so i doubt its that.

EDIT-
I assume when folks refer to the bottom pully breaking up it is the one that drives the aux belt???

Take the belt off and see if the engine still rattles, check the pulley to see if it's nice and tight and doesn't wobble. The crankshaft pulley on the XUD11is not the same as the HDi, as far as I know it doesn't break up into three pieces as happened to me on my Berlingo, very very noisy when it went. I would personally replace the tensioner, idler and belt since I had the belt come off twice earlier this year. Since replacement it hasn't happened again.

From my research its a 2 piece affair which delaminates and comes loose.

The belt and tensionew were changed only 5K miles ago so im pretty sure its not them.

At dinner time today i whipped the inner wing chit shield out and the under tray off and got a mate to rev the car.

The noise was definately from the drivers side and after a couple of minutes i whittled it down to the AC compressor.

When the AC is OFF the clutch diaphram was chattering against the face of the pully at certain rpm's

When the AC was ON the AC clutch was not working propperly and stopped spinning - im guessing that the AC was not working propperly at this point?

When the throttle was blipped the clutch would spin again and then stop so it was kind of on-off a lot.

What are my options with the compressor? Repair and rebuild? Or junk it and replace? BTW its a Delphi unit.

Cheers
Colin
