Does anyone have experience of buying a 'chip' instead of mapping? - bought one for my Passat and it went really well and a lot cheaper - thanks in advance

those chips pretty much just cause over-fuelling, which in the long ron ain't good for your engine

A HDi 'chip' just raises the fuel pressure to squirt more diesel in (and put strain on the high pressure pump the whole time).
A re-map is a lot more refined and mimicks the original map but runs the fueling and turbo pressure in sync making sure there are no rich or lean spots along the way.
You get what you pay for I suppose
