Performance and Noise!

Hi,
Has anyone had this problem or known of it, I own a 1.9D standard setup nothing fancy and I love my car very much even though it has had better days (glad to say its been in the garage less time than my Mrs ST170 lol)...
The engine sound ok on start up but when driving if i push on the go-faster pedal there is no responce from the engine to incress it's revs, it seems to hold back for a few seconds then apply causing the car to increase revs late. I have noticed that it happens near 3K (or there about) revs and does not help when trying to pass grandma in her rover on sundays
I know the car is not a fast model but this is not right and been doing this since I came back from a weekend break, whilst on the motorway it happens alot;trundling along at 60/70 (can happen at other speeds) then I need to accelorate up a hill or past grandma again and the car seems to hold back its power and then picks up to near normal performance about 5/8 seconds later
Also I have noticed a rumbling noise even when the clutch is in, this noise is at all times when driving, I think it could be the engine mount or bearing but could it also cause the above issue?
Regards
