Now what #∞ - followed by a cloud of smoke...

And there I was complimenting myself on my steadily decreasing fuel consumption :( On the way ohm yesterday I floored it to get round a school bus before it became my permanent view on the twisty bits. I glanced in the mirrors to make sure I'd cleared it and saw a cloud of smoke. Oh no... Got home, gave it a few revs and the cloud reappeared, together with a patch of soot on the deck.

The question is: is it that my grandma-style driving has filled the exhaust full of soot and giving it some welly is blowing it out (wishfull thinking I reckon) or my egr's up the swany?

New egr from Pug: about 120 quid (here prices), will check alternatives later (after I've finished in the garden, pumpkin anyone?)

Both are likely causes. You can always disconnect the EGR - you don't really need it.

I'll say it again, the bloke wot dun my MOT told me older diesels need a good kicking now and again. The more, um, sedately you drive the more crap you build up in there. We have a laugh at the italian tune-up but it got me through my emissions test 8)

Hopefully it's just the build-up from 'eco-friendly' motoring - guess you'll know soon enough if you give it some regular 'encouragement' :supafrisk:

But that goes against my economy driving regime :( I had to fill up earlier (range left was just a row of dashes). 999km (~600 miles), furthest I ever went on one tank in any car! 64 liters went in, so that's a shade over 6.4l/100km or 44mpg in old money. This is still short journeys around this little town here, averaging well below 30mph. And my car is broke? :?

I gave it a bootfull earlier, things behind don't actually disappear but...

I was looking at the egr earlier as a preamble to blocking it. Or I should say, I was trying to look at it - I can't even get my mirror at an angle so I can see what I'm doing. Obviously if it was stuck open there'd be no point in disconnecting the vacuum solenoid as it'd still smoke, so really I'd have to block the thing itself. Then I noticed the pipe from the egr to the inlet manifold has a water jacket around it, on the pipe leading into the heater matrix - is this this mythical (not actually) electrical preheater? So not wanting to block this off!

I've got one of those!
Now I guessed this was to cool the recirced exhaust gas should it be dumb enough to operate the EGR during a FAP regen, or maybe in case it leaks a bit......
Does it look like this?

Have you got one of the mythical 110's wiv a FAP system?

Nope, my Italian import doesn't have a FAP (thank feck!). The diagram that looks closest to mine is "TURBO DIESEL DW10TD AND EEC 2000 DEPOLL (ENGINE)" - only 2 vacuum solenoids plus this "water exchanger" (21 in your diagram there). Oh look, they're only 200 quid

I took it for a second opinion earlier, I explained about how I'd been driving it and was told to give it a sound thrashing, if symptoms persist etc. etc. One Italian tune-up later and it's still smoking, nothing like as bad tho. Drives better now too :? I still suppose I'd better check out availability of non-Pug branded spares, just in case.
