Looking through the posts there are lots about vibrations caused by various engine mounts being worn.
Can someone with great wisdom and experience post a 'guide to how to know which engine mount is stuffed' please?

cant help much with a guide but on my last 406 it turned out to be the bottom mount to the subframe even though it looked fine and didnt move much with a big bar. Maybe it just went soft over the years?

There's always movement. With 3 new engine mounts I can rock a V6 engine about quite happily by hand


There's no easy way to tell if a mount's gone if you've not experienced it before. I think the way to tackle it has to be like this:

1. If you're getting vibration or a knock when accelerating, especially at low revs, and it's not there at idle, it's likely to be an engine mount
2. Replace the pear-shaped top mount first. It's only about £20, it's easy to change and given it's taken the weight of an engine for 10 years, it's due a change anyhow.
3. If that didn't work, pray it's the torque reaction link on the top mount. Changing the bottom mount is not an easy job. Check you're firing on all cylinders first though

I don't think anyone's had to replace a gearbox mount yet.

The thing with mounts is they can look fine, they can even have less movement than other mounts, but they can still be broken.
