Hi, I dont know if this is in the right section, so if its not, im sorry mods.
Basically, had to call the AA out today to start my 406. Guy came and told me i had a dodgy earth from battery to gearbox, and a 'lazy' starter motor. Have replaced the earth cable. Thing is, the starter is very tempermental. It started on the key a few times this afternoon, however, tonight when taking kids to a halloween party, i turned the key and it was dead. I had to tap the motor with a screwdriver, and then it started.
So question is, do i need a new starter motor, or would a clean/grease do the job?
Also, is the tubby motor specific to the model, or would a 2.0 16v / 1.8 16v jobbie do the trick???

Solenoid? Can you hear it clicking when you turn the key or there no noise at all?
As nigel says, you should be able to get it refurbished for a fraction of the cost of a new one.

Re: Tubby Starter motor
with the above, you could also get one from a scrap yard. easy to get to anyway so shouldnt be a problem but its definately the solenoid
Re: Tubby Starter motor
Thanks guys. Is the solenoid attached to the starter motor then? Im going to the scrap yard later today.

Yes it's attached. It's the smaller of the two cylinders, the larger is the motor itself. You'll see what I mean when you get your spare one from the scrappy.
