Tubby Starter motor

Hi, I dont know if this is in the right section, so if its not, im sorry mods.
Basically, had to call the AA out today to start my 406. Guy came and told me i had a dodgy earth from battery to gearbox, and a 'lazy' starter motor. Have replaced the earth cable. Thing is, the starter is very tempermental. It started on the key a few times this afternoon, however, tonight when taking kids to a halloween party, i turned the key and it was dead. I had to tap the motor with a screwdriver, and then it started.
So question is, do i need a new starter motor, or would a clean/grease do the job?
Also, is the tubby motor specific to the model, or would a 2.0 16v / 1.8 16v jobbie do the trick???
